Bali - get Schapelle Corby six months reduction?

Australian Schapelle Corby, 35, originally sentenced to 20 years in jail over an attempt to smuggle 4.2kg of marijuana into Bali in a surfboard bag, is in line for a six-month reduction in her sentence, Kerobokan jail governor Gusti Ngurah Wiratna has confirmed.

Renae Lawrence, one of a group known as the ‘Bali Nine’, is also in line for a six-month reduction. She was arrested in 2005 at Ngurah Rai airport with 2.7kg of heroin concealed on her body. She has already received two years of remission on her sentence.

Corby has been eligible to apply for parole since last August but has not yet lodged a formal application after the government brought in stricter parole conditions in April for prisoners convicted of serious crimes. Under the new rules, Corby would have to agree to become a “justice collaborator”, as well as admitting guilt and showing remorse.

Corby’s lawyer, Iskandar Nawing, said he was still waiting for word from immigration department officials who have yet to provide a letter clarifying her immigration status, which is needed before she applies for parole. Corby’s original 20-year term has already been cut by five years by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

If Corby fails to win parole, the latest sentence cut, if confirmed, should mean the earliest she could walk free from Kerobokan jail would be mid-2015, assuming she continues to win the maximum eight months per year in remissions.
